Sixth Grade

Program Description
As a student enters Sixth Grade, he/she experiences a significant transition associated with being a junior-high student. Beginning course work in Religion, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Fine Arts and Physical Education will be the elements of the typical schedule.

Main Themes/Skills

Religion
Emphasis is placed on the Hebrew Scriptures with a connection to our Catholic Christian identity and a focus on issues of peace and justice.

Language Arts
Work continues in grammar and composition, creative and formal writing skills, reading skills and strategies; novels read include: Tuck Everlasting, Hatchet, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, A Wrinkle in Time, and Holes.

Mathematics
Students work with decimals and fractions, geometry and an introduction into algebra, examining word problems and determining solutions; developing projects for research.

Social Studies
Students focus on World History and the culture, economics, politics, religions, resources, triumphs and tragedies of  Europe,Africa, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. Understanding maps, climates, and resources are also a part of the curriculum

Science
Earth science, Astronomy, and the laws of physics are key to the 6th grade Science curriculum.
